| Description | Ceftiofur Hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt form of ceftiofur, a semisynthetic, beta-lactamase-stable, broad-spectrum, third-generation cephalosporin with antibacterial activity. Ceftiofur binds to and inactivates penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. PBPs are enzymes involved in the terminal stages of assembling the bacterial cell wall and in reshaping the cell wall during growth and division. Inactivation of PBPs interferes with the cross-linkage of peptidoglycan chains necessary for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity. This results in the weakening of the bacterial cell wall and causes cell lysis. | Chemical Properties | Off-White Solid | Uses | An antibacterial. | Uses | Ceftiofur hydrochloride (ceftiofur) has been approved for treatment against respiratory diseases in many animals.1,3,8–10 The recommended dosage regimen of ceftiofur for the treatment of swine respiratory disease is 3–5 mg/kg body weight (BW) administered intramuscularly once daily for 3–5 consecutive days. | Veterinary Drugs and Treatments | In swine, ceftiofur HCl injection is labeled for the treatment and
control of swine bacterial respiratory disease (swine bacterial
pneumonia) associated with Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) pleuropneumoniae,
Pasteurella multocida, Salmonella choleraesuis and
Streptococcus suis.
In cattle, ceftiofur HCl is labeled for the treatment of the following
bacterial diseases: Bovine respiratory disease (BRD, shipping
fever, pneumonia) associated with Mannheimia haemolytica,
Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni; Acute bovine interdigital
necrobacillosis (foot rot, pododermatitis) associated with
Fusobacterium necrophorum and Bacteroides melaninogenicus; and
acute metritis (0 – 14 days post-partum) associated with bacterial
organisms susceptible to ceftiofur.
The intramammary syringe for dry dairy cattle (Spectramast
DC?) is labeled for the treatment of subclinical mastitis in dairy
cattle at the time of dry off associated with Staphylococcus aureus,
Streptococcus dysgalactiae, and Streptococcus uberis. The intramammary
syringe for lactating dairy cattle (Spectramast LC?) is labeled
for the treatment of clinical mastitis in lactating dairy cattle associated
with coagulase-negative staphylococci, Streptococcus dysgalactiae,
and Escherichia coli. |
