Definition
A
hydrochloride salt of polyhexamethylene biguanide. It is a broad
spectrum and fast acting bactericide which is used for the formulation
of disinfectants and sanitisers.
Side effects
PHMB (polyaminopropyl biguanide) proved toxic to keratocytes and was shown to have acute toxic effects in human cells where it caused severe inflammation, atherogenesis, and aging.
Safety
Polyaminopropyl Biguanide (PHMB) is not safe for consumers when used as a preservative in all cosmetic products up to the maximum concentration of 0.3%. The safe use could be based on a lower use concentration and/or restrictions with regard to cosmetic products' categories.
