Barium Nitrite has the molecular formula of Ba(NO2)2
and the molecular weight of 247.3532 g/mol. Barium
nitrite is made by double decomposition from barium
chloride and sodium nitrite:
BaCl2 + 2NaNO2 ? Ba(NO2)2 + 2NaCl
It is soluble so that the solution must be evaporated at
low temperature to obtain crystals. The product is
a monohydrate whose molecular weight is 247.4356 g/
mol and whose CAS number is 7787-38-4. It loses water
at about 100°C and the anhydrous salt melts with
decomposition at 217°C. It occurs as yellowish-white
crystals whose solubility is 75.3 g/100 ml. It is insoluble
in ethanol.
Chemical Properties
colorless, hexagonal [CRC10]
Uses
In diazotization reactions; prevention of corrosion of steel bars; in explosives.
