General Description
CX3CR1 (chemokine (C-X3-C motif) receptor 1) is a surface receptor for chemoattractant cytokines. It is expressed by circulating monocytes, tissue macrophages and dendritic cells, T cells and natural killer (NK) cells. It acts as a receptor for CX3CL1 chemokine. In brain, it is expressed only in microglial cells.
Biochem/physiol Actions
CX3C chemokine receptor 1 (CX3CR1) plays an important role in modulating inflammatory responses that includes monocyte homeostasis and macrophage phenotype and function. CX3CR1 is associated with angiogenic macrophage survival in the tumor microenvironment contributing to tumor metastasis. It is implicated as a candidate gene for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). CX3CR1 polymorphisms may influence the incidence and the outcome of acute myocardial infarction.
