Lithium tetraborate Usage And Synthesis
DescriptionLithium tetraborate in combination with oxalic acids and lithium carbonate in the ratio (1:1:1) may be used as an effective fusing agent for siliceous samples. It is widely employed in lithium tetraborate fusion procedure, suited for a variety of soils and rocks. Lithium tetraborate also finds applications in radiation detectors and dosimeters.
Chemical Propertieswhite powder(s); -100 mesh with 99.9% purity; used as a flux in x-ray fluorescence analysis, in grease formulations, and as an electrolyte component in lithium batteries [FMC93] [CER91] [STR93]
UsesLithium Tetraborate (also known as lithium borate) is the lithium salt of boric acid, a weak, monobasic Lewis acid of boron. The chemical compound is often used in spectrometry as a fusion flux for sample preparation. Samples prepared using a lithium tetraborate fusion flux are highly accurate, and materials such as glass, cement, steel, nickel, and copper often use this method.
Lithium tetraborate may be used as an analytical reagent for the analysis of major and trace elements in coal fly ashes and environmental materials using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). It may also be used as an alkali fusion reagent for the determination of silicon in zirconium oxide powder using ICP-AES.
UsesAn acidic flux for fusing basic oxides, carbonates, alumino silicates, glass, ceramics, cement, steel, aluminum, concrete mixes, soils, magnesites, bauxites and rare earth oxidesSpectroflux 100, Lithium tetraborate (100-500 micron) is an acidic flux used for fusing basic oxides, carbonates, alumino silicates, concrete mixes, soils, magnesites, bauxites and rare earth oxides.
UsesUsed as a spectroscopic fluxing agent.
PreparationLithium tetraborate, Li2B4O7, may be made by fusing together lithium hydroxide and boric acid. Lithium tetraborate trihydrate, Li2B4O7·3H2O , may be recovered from an aqueous solution of lithium carbonate and boric acid having a lithium to boron ratio of 0.5.
