1,3-Dicyanobenzene Usage And Synthesis
Chemical Propertiesoff-white to light brown solid
UsesAn intermediate in the manufacture of paints, varnishes, and agricultural chemicals.
Uses1,3-Dicyanobenzene was used in the synthesis of oxazolines and 1,3-bis-(4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolinyl)benzene.
DefinitionChEBI: Isophthalonitrile is a nitrile. It is functionally related to an isophthalic acid.
General DescriptionWhite, crystalline or flaky solid with an almond-like odor. Mp:161-2°C (sublimes) Density 1.28 g cm-3 (at 25°C). Insoluble in water. Soluble in benzene and in acetone. Used as an intermediate in the manufacture of polyurethane paints and varnishes, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural chemicals.
Reactivity Profile1,3-Dicyanobenzene is a combustible solid. Emits toxic fumes of NOx and CN- when heated to decomposition. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.
Health Hazardm-Phthalodinitrile is a skin irritant in animals. In humans there have been no reports of adverse effects. The probable reason for lack of systemic effects is that aromatic, unlike aliphatic, nitriles do not liberate cyanide in the body.
Flammability and ExplosibilityNotclassified
Safety ProfilePoison by ingestion. An eye irritant. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of NOx and CN-. See also NITRILES.
