Colestipol hydrochloride Usage And Synthesis
UsesAntihyperlipidemic.
UsesColestipol Hydrochloride was useful for studying pharmacokinetics with Teriflunomide (A771726).
DefinitionChEBI: The hydrochloride of colestipol, a highly cross-linked, high molecular weight copolymer of diethylenetriamine and epichlorohydrin (hydrochloride), with approximately 1 out of 5 amine nitrogens protonated. It is used for binding bile acids in the intestine, inhibiting their reabsorption.
Brand nameColestid (Pharmacia & Upjohn).
General DescriptionColestipol (Colestid) is ahigh–molecular-weight, insoluble, granular copolymer oftetraethylenepentamine and epichlorohydrin. It functions asan anion-exchange, resin-sequestering agent in a manner similarto that of cholestyramine resin. Colestipol hydrochloridereduces cholesterol levels without affecting triglycerides andseems to be especially effective in the treatment of type IIhyperlipoproteinemias.
Drug interactionsPotentially hazardous interactions with other drugs
Anticoagulants: may enhance or reduce effects of coumarins and phenindione.
Ciclosporin: no reports of an interaction; however, ciclosporin levels should be carefully monitored if colestipol and ciclosporin are prescribed concurrently, as colestipol may interfere with ciclosporin absorption.

MetabolismNot applicable as colestipol is not systemically absorbed.
