DIBENZO(A,E)PYRENE Usage And Synthesis
UsesDibenzo[a,e]pyrene is a polyaromatic hydrocarbon with inherent carcinogenic properties.
DefinitionChEBI: Dibenzo[a,e]pyrene is an ortho- and peri-fused polycyclic arene.
General DescriptionYellow crystals. Water insoluble.
Air & Water ReactionsDust/air mixtures may ignite and explode. Insoluble in water.
Reactivity ProfileVigorous reactions, sometimes amounting to explosions, can result from the contact between aromatic hydrocarbons, such as DIBENZO(A,E)PYRENE, and strong oxidizing agents. They can react exothermically with bases and with diazo compounds. Substitution at the benzene nucleus occurs by halogenation (acid catalyst), nitration, sulfonation, and the Friedel-Crafts reaction.
Safety ProfileConfirmed carcinogen with experimental neoplastigenic and tumorigenic data. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.
CarcinogenicityDibenzo[a,e]pyrene was assessed in two initiation–promotion studies on mouse skin. One of the studies gave positive results while other gave negative results. Dibenzo[a,e]pyrene gave negative results when tested for carcinogenicity by intramamillary administration to rats.
