2-METHYL-1-PENTANOL Usage And Synthesis
Chemical PropertiesCLEAR COLOURLESS LIQUID
UsesSolvent, intermediate.
Production Methods2-Methyl-1-pentanol is prepared by the aldol condensation of propionaldehyde and subsequent hydrogenation of the intermediate 2-methyl-2-pentanol. Commercially, the methyl- 1-pentanols are rarely used alone but as amixture.
Synthesis Reference(s)Journal of the American Chemical Society, 77, p. 6052, 1955 DOI: 10.1021/ja01627a077
General DescriptionNonaqueous lipase-catalyzed kinetic resolution of racemic 2-methyl-1-pentanol in a continuously operated fixed bed reactor has been reported. Molar excess enthalpies of binary mixtures of 2-methyl-1-pentanol with n-hexane and its isomers has been measured in a flow microcalorimeter.
HazardModerate fire risk.
Safety ProfileModerately toxic by ingestion and skin contact. A skin and severe eye irritant. Human systemic irritant by inhalation. A flammable liquid; can react with oxidizing materials. To fight fire, use Con, dry chemical. When heated to decomposition it emits smoke and acrid fumes.
Purification MethodsDry the 1-pentanol with Na2SO4 and distil it. [Beilstein 1 IV 1713.]
