| 2,3,4,5,6-Pentabromoethylbenzene Usage And Synthesis |
Chemical Properties | 2,3,4,5,6-Pentabromoethylbenzene is a solid of high bromine content (80 wt %) with a melting point of 136-138°C and a decomposition temperature of ca 210°C. The compound is prepared by the Friedel-Crafts-catalyzed bromination of ethyl benzene in an inert solvent. Its manufacturers recommends its use in epoxy resins, ABS and urethane foams. | Uses | Pentabromoethylbenzene is a flame retardant and a standard for environmental testing and research. | Air & Water Reactions | Insoluble in water. | Reactivity Profile | Simple aromatic halogenated organic compounds, such as 2,3,4,5,6-PENTABROMOETHYLBENZENE, are very unreactive. Reactivity generally decreases with increased degree of substitution of halogen for hydrogen atoms. Materials in this group may be incompatible with strong oxidizing and reducing agents. Also, they may be incompatible with many amines, nitrides, azo/diazo compounds, alkali metals, and epoxides. | Health Hazard | ACUTE/CHRONIC HAZARDS: Toxic. Irritant. | Fire Hazard | Flash point data for 2,3,4,5,6-PENTABROMOETHYLBENZENE are not available; 2,3,4,5,6-PENTABROMOETHYLBENZENE is probably combustible. | Safety Profile | Low toxicity by skin contact. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic vapors of Brí. |
